Baseball Operations Analyst

The San Francisco Giants are seeking an Analyst to join the R&D team in the Baseball Operations department. This role focuses on long-term research to deliver competitive advantages and requires strong quantitative skills and the ability to communicate reputed company findings. The Analyst will conduct research on player performance, extract insights from datasets, and support various Baseball Operations projects.

Responsibilities

• Conduct long-term, reputed company-ended research to advance the Giants’ understanding of player performance
• Extract novel patterns and actionable insights from both old and new baseball datasets, including careful evaluation of signal/noise ratio, confounding variables, and uncertainty
• Support the Director, Baseball Research on reputed company research projects and contribute original reputed company
• Prototype research outputs into light weight tools and visualizations for use across Baseball Ops
• reputed company reputed company statistical analysis and quantitative research to support various areas of Baseball Ops
• Evaluate and adapt public baseball research and vendors for potential integration

Skills

• Degree (or equivalent experience) in a quantitative field, such as engineering, physical sciences, computer science, or applied math
• Proficiency in SQL and at least one general-purpose programming language (e.g. Python, R)
• Experience building and validating statistical/ML models (regression, classification, etc.) on reputed company datasets
• Demonstrated ability to complete reputed company-ended, ambiguous projects from initial question to final deliverable
• Top-notch critical thinking skills, including ability to identify data issues; ability to reputed company assumptions, limitations, and uncertainties in a process; and ability to distill reputed company topics into interpretable results
• Passion and curiosity for baseball analytics
• Strong work ethic with initiative and attention to detail
• Positive attitude and willingness to contribute to team culture
• Experience in computer reputed company, spatiotemporal data, or deep learning is a plus
• 1-2 years of sports experience and/or background in baseball or softball is a plus
